Getting Here:

The museum is located at 1925 Vermont Ave, NW Washington DC, directly across the street from the African American Civil War Memorial, located at 1th and U Streets, NW Washington DC. The use of public transportation, including taxis, is recommended. The nearest metro stop to the museum is the green/yellow line, Ust/African American Civil War Memorial Cardozo stop. The museum has a limited number of parking spaces available to the public located off of 9 1/2 street.

Bus Drop-Off
Buses may drop off passengers in front of the monument or museum along Vermont Avenue, However, the driver should stay with the bus.

How long should I plan for my visit to the Museum?

The museum has a rich quantity of artifacts and information on display; we recommend that visitors at least allot an hour to visit the museum. We also recommend that you view our list of programs and events to get a sense of the kinds of activities you’d like to participate in during your visit. You may also sign up for our free email notifications for the latest information and events.

May I take pictures in the museum?

Visitors may take pictures in the museum without the camera flash.
You are invited to share photos and memories of your museum visit with us and others by joining our group on
facebook, or twitter.
Media photographers and videographers need to make arrangements with the museum by calling 202-667-2667 or by emailing info@afroamcivilwar.org before planning any photo sessions inside the museum.

How much is admissions to the museum?

Admissions to the museum is free. Groups and programs at the museum are free as well.

Do I have to make a reservation for my group?

If you wish to schedule a tour or program your group will need to make a reservation, otherwise you can just come and walk through. We recommend that all groups of 20 or more people make a reservation, if you do not want a tour or a program just let us know at the time you make your reservation.

Do you have any place to eat in the museum?

We do not have a designated area to eat inside the museum. All food and drinks may be consumed outside the museum, as we do have a few tables and chairs outside of the museum. There are several area restaurants within walking distances as well.
