A refugee camp for African Americans during the Civil War. Though nothing of the camps is visible today, its general location to the north of the Logan Circle, in the block containing the Garrison Elementary School, is fairly well known.

Living History Camp: Camp Barker

Experience Civil War Camp life on the former grounds of camp Barker. The only contraband camp once located in the U street community and home to nearly 4,000 people.

Camp Barker (Garrison Field) is located on Vermont Avenue between S street and R street, Washington, DC.
