The African American Civil War Museum is excited to help you along in finding your Civil War ancestor and learning more about these courageous soldiers.

The Descendants Room
If you think you might have a Civil War ancestor and need help starting your genealogy research make an appointment with a museum staff person today and we will help get you started.  To make an appointment or to ask questions call 202-667-2667 ext 101.

Getting Started:

  • The Soldiers and Sailors database only provides, regiment, company, rank in/out, microfilm number and location on the wall at the African American Civil War Memorial.  For a more complete record we encourage descendants to go to the National Archives and Records Administration and retrieve the pension or military records for their ancestor.
  • If you do not know of an ancestor who might have served in the Civil War it might be best to work your way back to the Civil War time period.  Start with what you know about your family or if you have older members of you family that remembers names and dates.
