Have you visited the AFRICAN - AMERICAN Civil War Museum yet?

We are the nation's first and only national memorial to Colored Troops in the Civil War.

We encourage business associations, schools, family reunions, and other groups to visit us here at the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum 1000 and 1200 U Street respectively. When visiting the museum you will see prints from Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated elucidating the role of African Americans throughout the Civil War. You will also find photographs, newspaper articles, and replicas of period clothing, uniforms and weaponry. Additionally, you will see on display several unique items including an 1834 bill of sale for a young girl in Wilcox County, Alabama.

To schedule a tour of the African American Civil War Museum, please call us at 202-667-2667 (groups of less than five need not call ahead). The tour entails a 15 to 30 minute lecture highlighting the contributions of African Americans during the Civil War followed by a question and answer period. Upon request we supplement the lecture with our award-winning documentary "Fight for Freedom," which details the formation of the USCT, and their role in the abolishment of slavery. At the conclusion of the presentation, our visitors are encouraged to view the display at their leisure, taking time to appreciate the contributions of these remarkable soldiers.

Because of our limited capacity, groups of over 40 people should schedule their tour at least three weeks in advance. In those cases where you are unable to notify us in time, larger groups must be split into more manageable divisions and accommodations need be made with us or any of the numerous attractions here in the U Street corridor to house those members who are not able to visit the museum. Most often we suggest that groups explore 'Walls of Honor' at the memorial on 10th and U while the remainder visits the museum located two blocks away on 12th and U. At the conclusion of the tour, we send the museum group to the memorial so that we can then speak to those group members who had not yet been to the museum. Feel free to contact us for suggestions.

When scheduling your tour, please be prepared to provide us with the name of the group or organization, number of persons who will be attending the museum, and either a phone number or email address that can be used to contact you.

Touring the museum is free of charge, however we do encourage donations. Thank you, and we look forward to your visit.
