Volunteers play an important role at the African American Civil War Museum.  If you have a love of history volunteering at the museum may be the right place for you.  The volunteer program provides a wide range of volunteer opportunities.  Volunteers assist with education, interpretation, fundraising, administrative support and special events.

Internships

The African American Civil War Museum is seeking the participation of interns in several areas to assist with a variety of projects during the spring, summer and fall of 2012. The available internships are listed below along with a brief description of their requirements and other relevant information.  Spring internships start in January, Summer in May and Fall in August; however, there is some flexibility. We consider proposals for internships outside of posted announcements.  If you are seeking an internship in interpretation and research, education, marketing and development, or web/media and do not see one listed that addresses your interest, please send a cover letter, resume, two letters of reference and outline of your proposed internship objectives to dawnchitty@afroamcivilwar.org.

Applicants should be resourceful, willing to take on new challenges, comfortable interacting with people in a variety of situations, demonstrate strong written and oral communications skills, and attention to detail.

Marketing & PR Intern:

This internship provides an opportunity to meet key community contacts and learn about marketing and advertising for a nonprofit. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, marketing activities such as creating ad copy and marketing analysis, public relations activities such as writing press releases, taking photos, assisting in video and online components, social media integration, pitching new concepts for media coverage angles, media interaction, securing press attendance, research, updating and maintaining media lists, assembling press kits, and providing support at special events.  Internship length is 10-15 weeks, 15-20 hrs/wk. Hours are flexible. (unpaid)

Development Intern:

As a nonprofit organization our development plays a crucial role in cultivating financial support for the museum and building lasting relationships with our donors. Development interns will assist with the management of donor files, expanding development efforts, research projects, and donor related communication and events. Project length is 10-15 weeks, 15-20 hrs/wk, with a flexible schedule. (unpaid)

Education & Public Programs Intern:

Students with a desire to share the history of the United States Colored Troops with the public will provide guided tours of the museum, conduct education programs for school groups assist with planning and preparation for education and public programs in addition to working on an individual project.  Projects may include; research, program design, visitor satisfaction studies, early childhood education programs, and other projects related to the function of the education at the museum. Research:

This internship offers students the opportunity to engage research projects ongoing at the museum and independent project proposed by the intern.  Project length is 10-15 weeks, 15-20 hrs/wk, with a flexible schedule. Must be able to work independently and possess impeccable writing and research skills. (unpaid)
